Street, Travel & Documentary Photography Workshop

Berlim

Berlin is a city where histories overlap, identities shift, and visual languages collide. It is a place of constant transition — between East and West, old and new, silence and intensity. This workshop is designed for photographers who want to refine their documentary vision, work with intention, and construct narratives that reveal the complexity of contemporary urban life.

Led by documentary photographer Daniel Rodrigues, this four-day immersive programme blends fieldwork, editing, individual guidance and thoughtful discussion. The aim is not to chase stereotypes of Berlin, but to understand the city through light, rhythm, gesture and the lived reality of its neighbourhoods.

Maximum: 8 participants

Minimum: 5 participants

Duration: 4 intensive days

Fee: 675 € per participant

Workshop taught entirely in English

Why Berlin?

Berlin is one of Europe’s most diverse and visually layered cities. Its identity is in permanent motion — multicultural streets, remnants of the past, contemporary architecture, independent scenes, and neighbourhoods with distinct social dynamics.

The light can be muted, directional, cinematic or abrupt, depending on the season and the district.

Each area offers a different documentary challenge:

• Kreuzberg — multicultural life, markets, movement

• Neukölln — strong rhythms, contrasts, quiet corners

• Friedrichshain — post-industrial textures and youth culture

• Mitte — institutional landscapes and structured geometry

• Wedding — authentic everyday life, slower tempo

• Prenzlauer Berg — gestures, families, routines, order and repetition

Berlin is not about spectacle. It is about atmosphere, tension, identity, and the subtle moments that define a city constantly rewriting itself.

This workshop is ideal for photographers who want to strengthen:

• observational discipline in complex environments

• sensitivity to muted or low-contrast light

• human approach rooted in cultural awareness

• the ability to navigate fast-changing urban contexts

• narrative building in contemporary European cities

Berlin teaches clarity, patience and an acute awareness of environment.

1) Working with Berlin’s unpredictable light

Berlin light changes quickly — soft and diffused in the morning, harsh and directional at midday, long and cinematic at sunset.

You will learn to:

• expose with precision in low-contrast environments

• use reflections, glass and shadows as compositional elements

• work efficiently in flat or grey light

• adapt quickly to transitions across different districts

2) Composition in multicultural and visually dense environments

Berlin is visually layered, but often in a quieter, more structured way.

You will develop:

• the ability to read calm but complex scenes

• understanding of architectural rhythm and geometry

• timing within slow-unfolding human movement

• anticipation in environments where expression is subtle

3) Human approach in a city of diversity

Berlin is culturally broad and socially varied. A respectful, observant approach is essential.

You will learn how to:

• approach people with sensitivity and awareness

• recognise moments where photographing is appropriate

• understand the etiquette of public and private space

• create trust through presence, calm and clarity

4) Documentary storytelling in a contemporary European capital

The goal is to build a coherent visual narrative, not to collect isolated images.

You will explore:

• neighbourhood identities

• social tensions and harmonies

• traces of history in daily life

• quiet micro-stories

• the feeling of transition that defines Berlin
