The Senhor de Matosinhos festival is one of the oldest religious festivals in northern Portugal, going back more than seven centuries, and it takes over the city every year between late May and mid June. Alongside the religious side, with the procession of the Bom Jesus de Matosinhos and the fireworks, there is the funfair, which fills the streets for weeks.

The carousels and the bumper cars, the claw machines full of soft toys, the balloon seller sitting outside the library, a couple talking between two stalls, the stage where the band Iniciadores played. The low evening light coming in between the stalls, and then the neon taking over.

It is the same festival it has always been, the devotion on one side and the funfair on the other, both happening in turn on the same streets.
